Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award is the highest sports award given in the field of sports in India. This award is given by Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs of the government of India. This award was started in the year 1991-92. The award is given every year. This award was named after the Former Prime Minister of India, late Shri Rajiv Gandhi. Shri Rajiv Gandhi was the Prime Minister of India from the year 1984-1989. Currently, this award consists of a certificate, a medal and a cash prize of Rs 25 Lakh. The Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs determines the criteria for the selection of the Award winners. This award was given to players who had displayed outstanding, exceptional and spectacular talent in the field of sports at the international level at the last 4 years.
The Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award is rooted in India’s quest for sporting excellence on the global stage. In the early 1990 s, there was a growing recognition of the need to honour and incentivize Indian athletes who were excelling in their respective sports disciplines. Established in 1991-92, the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, now known as the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award, initially recognised outstanding sports performance within a single year.
The Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award formely known as the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award until 2021, stands as India’s top honor in sports. It is bestowed annually by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and sports, Government of India. Renamed in tribute to the legendary Hockey player Major Dhyan Chand, the National Sports Day is observed every year across India on 29th August to mark the birth anniversary of the legendary Hockey player Dhyan Chand, born on 29th August 1905.
It aims to recognise the honour sporting excellence, motivate athletes to strive for greatness , inspire future generations, promote sports diversity and instil national pride through exceptional achievements on the globe stage.
