The 19th G20 Summit was held in Riode Janeiro, Brazil on November 18-19, 2024. The summit was hosted by Brazil, which held the G20 presidency from December 1, 2023 to November 30, 2024.

The summit was attended by leaders from the 19 member countries, as well as the African Union and the European Union. The summit’s main objectives were to address global challenges and crises and to promote sustainable, balanced and inclusive growth.

The Brazilian presidency launched the G20 Social, space where for the first time, the organisation will bring the civil society into the debate when it can participate and contribute to discussion and policy formulations regarding to the summit.

The G20 summit represents the conclusion of the work carried out by the country holding the group’s rotating presidency. It is the moment when heads of state and government approve the agreements negotiated throughout the year and point out ways of dealing with global challenges.

The G20 was founded in 1999 in response to several world economic crises. Since 2008, it has convented at least once a year, with summits involving each member’s head of government or state, finance minister or foreign minister and other high ranking officials, the EU is represented by the European Commission and the European Central Bank. Other Countries, international organisation, and non governmental organisations are invited to attend the summits, some per manently. In 2023, during its 2023 summit, the African Union joined as its 21st member and was officially represented at the 2024 G20 Summit in Brazil.
