India-Bhutan relations

Diplomatic relations between India and Bhutan were established in 1968. The tradition of regular political and official exchanges in an important hallmark of the special ties of friendship and cooperation between the two countries. Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi visited Bhutan on his first overseas visit after winning the election in 2014.

India and Bhutan partnership in the healthcare sector is diverse and multi faceted ranging from construction of hospitals, support to government flagship schemes as well as procurement of medicines and specialized medical equipment.

Bhutan was the first country to receive the Made in India Covishield vaccines under Ministry of External Affairs Vaccine Maitri Initiative. A total of 550,000 doses of Covishield were given to Bhutan as a gift.

Education is a strong pillar of cooperation between India and Bhutan. Many Bhutanese students benefit from scholarships for provided by the government of India for studying in Indian educational institutions.

The India Bhutan Foundation was established pursuant to singing of an MoU between India and Bhutan in New Delhi on 29 August 2003. The Foundation enhances exchanges amongst the people of India and Bhutan through activities in educational, cultural, scientific and technical fields. A number of Bhutanese pilgrims travel to Bodh Gaya, Rajgir, Nalanda, Sikkim, Udaya giri, Saranath and other Buddhist sites in India. As part of the 50th anniversary celebrations of the establishment of diplomatic relations between India and Bhutan.

Both countries signed an MoU on energy efficiency and conservation that demonstrates a commitment to sustainable development. India aim to assist Bhutan in enhancing energy efficiency in households, promoting the use of energy efficient appliances and developing standards and labelling schemes.

Bhutan shares its borders with India and China, and its strategic location makes it an important buffer state for India’s security interests. India has provided Bhutan with assistance in areas such as defence, infrastructure, and communication, which has helped to maintain Bhutan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. India has helped Bhutan build and maintain its border infrastructure, such as roads and bridges, to strengthen its defence capabilities and ensure its territorial integrity.
