International Women’s Day

International Women’s Day is celebrated on 8th March every year. Firstly International Women’s Day is celebrated in 1909, IWD has become a key date in the equality International Women’s Day gives focus to issues such as gender equality, reproductive rights and violence and abuse against women. The earliest version reported was a Woman’s Day organised by the Socialist Party of America in New York City on February 28, 1909.

International Women’s Day is a public holiday in several countries. The UN observes the holiday in connection with a particular issue, campaign, or theme in women’s International Women’s Day is celebrated many countries around the world. It is a day when women are recognised for their achievements without regard to divisions, whether national, ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic and political.

The first National Women’s Day was observed in the United States on 28 February. The socialist party of America designated this day in honour of the 1908 garment workers strike in New York, where women protested against working condition. The fact that Women’s Day is celebrated on March 8th is strongly linked to the women’s movement during the  Russian Revolution (1917).

International Women’s Day has assumed a new global dimension for women in developed and developing countries alike. The growing International Women’s  movement which has been strengthened  by four global United Nations women’s conferences, has helped make the commemoration a rallying point to build support for Women’s rights and participation in the  political and economic areas.

The purpose of International Women’s Day is to uphold women’s achievements, recognise challenges, and focus greater attention or women’s rights and gender equality. It is celebrated worldwide to spotlight women, their issues and achievements and has a different theme each year.

The UN sees international Women’s Day as a time to reflect on progress made , to call for change and to celebrate acts of courage and determination by ordinary women, who have played an extraordinary role in the history of their countries and communities.
