International Yoga Day

International Yoga Day is celebrated on 21st June every year. The world yoga derives from Sanskrit. It means to join or  to unite, symbolizing the union of body and consciousness.Yoga is an ancient physical, mental and spiritual practice that originated in India. The International Day of Yoga aims to raise awareness worldwide of many benefits of practicing yoga. Yoga day is performed in various forms all around the world. UNESCO declared Yoga as an Intangible cultural heritage from India.

International Yoga Day declared by the UN General Assembly on 11th December 2014. Yoga is an mental, physical and spiritual discipline or practice that has its origins in India.The day has special relevance in several different parts of the globe. Indian diplomatic missions, the Ministry of External Affairs , and the Prime Minister of India himself have ramped up their social media diplomacy on yoga. Yoga is seen as one of the best examples of soft power. As Yoga exercise have shown significant benefits for physical and mental well being,  it was considered important by the UN to globally promote this wellness practice, which originated in ancient India.

The initiative for Yoga Day was taken by India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his 2024 , UN address and the related resolution resolved recieved broad global support , with 177 nations co- sponsoring it in the United Nations General Assembly, where it passed unanimously. Subsequently, the first International Yoga Day was celebrated successfully on 21 June 2015, around the world including New York, Paris, Beijing, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Seoul and New Delhi.

International days and weeks are occasions to educate the public on issues of concern , to mobilize political will and resources to address global problems, and to celebrate and reinforce achievements of humanity. The existence of International days predates the establishment of the United Nations, but the UN has embraced them as a powerful advocacy tools.
