National Animal

Tiger is the National Animal of India. The National Animal is the symbol of the country’s natural wealth. The National and Native animal of India is the Royal Bengal Tiger. It is Majestic and deadly. The choice of animal to be chosen as a national animal may be based on several aspects. The combination of power, agility and unbeatable strength has made the Tiger the official animal of India.

The Gujarat Natural history society in 1948 led a well organised campaign that Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, to choose the Asiatic lion, as the National animal. In 1972, the Bengal Tiger was chosen as the nation’s animal at a meeting that the Indian Board held for wildlife. It we talk about the habitat of the Royal Bengal Tigers, they occupy numerous habitats throughout India . They are present in subtropical  tropical forest areas grassland or desert scrublands and Mangroves.

Royal Bengal Tigers are mostly single and rarely make up packs. They are territorial in nature and they have territorial boundaries. Royal Bengal Tiger became the National animal of India in 1973, following the launch of the Project Tiger 1973.

Tigers have been officially adopted as the National Animal of India on recommendation of the National Board for wildlife since April 1973. In popular local languages tigers called Bagh.

The tiger is estimated to have been present in India since the Late Pleistocene, for about 12000 to 16500 years.  The tiger is classified as Endangered in the IUCN’s Red list of  Threatened Species. Tigers throughout the Asia are found across 12 regional tiger conservation landscapes of which India is home to 6 global priority TCLs for long term tiger conservation significance , harboring  more than 60% of the global genetic variation in the tiger species. India is one of the founding members of the intergovernmental plateform of Tiger range countries.
