National Science Day is celebrated every year on 28th February. The National Council for Science and technology communication requested the Central Government to designate 28 February as National Science Day in 1986. 28 February to mark the discovery of the “Raman Effect” by sir C.V. Raman on 28 February 1928.
The NSD is celebrated to spread the message about the significance of science and how it improves the common folk. Display all activities, efforts and achievements in the field of science. To provide the opportunity those citizens of India. The National Science Day is celebrated to encourage and recognise outstanding efforts in the area of science and technology and inculcating scientific temper among the masses.
Along with the National Science Popularization awards, national award in other categories are also given on National Science Day. Some are National S&T National Communication Awards, Augmenting Writing skills for Articulating researchs Awards, Women Excellence Awards, Rajendra Prabhu memorial Appreciation Shield etc.
Since 1999, National Science Day celebrated keeping in mind certain specific themes.

The theme not only marks a new era but also presents an opportunity for public and scientific fraternity, both domestically and internationally, to collaborate, work together , and contribute to the well being of India and humanity as a whole. While emphasizing the importance of making India through science, it underscores the need to address subject that hold significance for humanity as a whole.

Sir C.V. Raman was a Tamil Braham who worked from 1907 to 1933 at the Indian Association for the cultivation of Science, Kolkata, West Bengal. Here, he had researched various topics of physics, of which one is the Raman Effect, Which marked the greatest discovery in the field of science in Indian history. In 1986, the National Council for Science and Technology communication asked the government of India to designate February 28 as National Science Day.
