Introduction:-
The Vir Chakra is an Indian wartime millitary bravery award.The medal is awarded to honour acts of gallantry while fighting enemy forces on land, at sea or in the air. The award can also be given posthumously. From Feb 1st 1999, the medal winner is awarded a sum of Rs.1700/- per month and the amount awarded for each successive award will be the same as was awarded on the first award. The decoration is almost always named and dated on the edge. Around a plain centre, two legends are separated by lotus flowers with Vir Chakra in Hindi above and in English below. A total of 1327 personnel recieved Vir Chakra.
History:
It was established by the president of India on 26 January 1950 . The statutes were amended on 12 January 1952 to read just the order of wearing as new decorations were established. It replaced the British Distinguished Service Cross and Military Cross and distinguished flying cross. Award of the decoration carries with it the right to it use Vir Chakra as the posto nominal abbreviation care to distinguish this abbreviation from that for the Victoria Cross.It is third in precedence in Wartime awards and comes after the Param Vir Chakra and MahaVir Chakra. The award carries with it a cash allowance and in some cases a lump sum cash award. This has been a rather controversial issue throughout the life of the decoration.
Eligibility:-
Officers and men and women of all ranks of the Army, Navy and Air Force, any reserve Forces, Territorial Forces, Militia and other legally constituted armed forces. Matrons, sisters and Nurses and staff of any gender of the Nursing service and of any hospital or other nursing related services and civilians working on a regular or temporary basis under the order, direction , supervision of any of the above services.
