Let’s start….
World Environment Day (WED) is celebrated on 5 June. The first celebration, under the slogan “Only One Earth” took place in 1973. In the following years, World Environment Day has developed as a platform to raise awareness on the problems facing our environment such as air pollution, plastic pollution, illegal wildlife trade, sustainable consumption, sea level increase, food security among others.
World Environment Day was established in 1972, by the United Nations at the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment (5-16 June 1972), that had resulted from discussions on the integration of human interactions and the environment. One year later, in 1973, the first WED was held with the theme “Only One Earth”.
The United Nations designated 5 June as world Environment Day to highlight that the protection and health of the environment is a major issue, which effects the well- being of peoples and economic development throughout the world. The celebration of this day provides us with an opportunity to broaden the basis for an enlightened opinion and responsible conduct by individuals, enterprises and communities in preserving and enhancing the environment.
As we mark World Environment Day and World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought, UNESCO is calling for a renewed commitment to life in all its forms.
